According to the National Geographic, of all the water on Earth, more than 99 percent of Earth's water is not usable by humans. Only about 0.3 percent of our water is found in the surface water of lakes, rivers and other water bodies. Hence, as the world population continues to grow, the pressure on these precious water resources is constantly rising.
Efficient water use has significant environmental, public health and economic benefits in terms of improving the quality of water available to all, maintaining ecosystems and easy access to safe drinking water. It can also save businesses and residential users a fair bit on their utility bills. Here are five ways in which residential users and businesses can save water
1. Stop leaks and install high-efficiency fixtures:
One of the first steps to control water consumption is to check taps, appliances and other fixtures for leaks. Where possible, install high-efficiency fixtures and devices like aerators and auto-shut-off faucets for substantial savings not only on water, but also on sewer and energy bills.
2. Install dual-flush toilets:
Newer toilets with dual-flush system use as little as 2-5 litres of water per flush compared to 20 litres or more in older systems, resulting in substantial savings in water bills.
3. Use energy-efficient appliances:
The energy efficiency of electrical appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, etc, are evaluated and classified by third-party testing and certification agencies. In 2023, Oman's Directorate of Standards and Metrology unveiled an expanded list of international certification agencies accredited to evaluate home appliance brands. One should always use these certifications and go for appliances with higher energy ratings.
Energy-efficient appliances are also efficient when it comes to their use of water. Besides this, one can look for appliances (like washing machines) with a low water factor. The lower the water factor, the less water the machine uses. Front-loading washing machines typically use less water than top-loading ones.
4. Choose suitable landscaping:
Always select plants, which are appropriate for the local climate. In Oman, landscaping is best done using heat- and drought-resistant plants and trees native to the country or from the wider region.
5. Provide just the right amount of water:
To avoid overwatering your plants, adjust the irrigation controls every month to account for temperature and weather changes. An intelligent irrigation system with soil moisture sensors can ensure that lawns and other green spaces receive the right amount of water at the right time, preventing overwatering and underwatering during winter and summer.
Water conservation requires planning and effort, but there is no doubt that every little bit helps. It helps preserve our environment and build strong communities. By making water conservation a way of life and teaching these values to our children, we can all contribute to a better future for the coming generations.
